Enzymic Catalysis
نویسنده
چکیده
The time of greatest sensitivity to radiation is during the period of organogenesis in the first twelve weeks of human foetal development. Irradiation of the adult can cause life shortening or increased incidence of leukemia. The last chapter is concerned with the basis and origin of radiation protection standards, the hazards of nuclear power plants, high altitude supersonic aerospace travel, civil defense, and finally medical irradiation and public health. Written as a series of four lectures, this book will be useful for instruction and as a reference book for physicians. It can be recommended as a straightforward text in which the important aspects of the subject are picked out of a vast literature and presented in an informative way.

Relation between enzymic catalysis and energy coupling.
The principles that underlie enzyme catalysis also apply to energy coupling processes. A comparison is made between a kinase system that mediates the phosphorylation of glucose by ATP (hexokinase), as the prototype for enzymic catalysis, and the mitochondrial electron-transfer complexes, as the prototypes for energy coupling systems. Induced polarization of chemical bonds and charge separation ...
متن کاملInfluence of incomplete cholesteryl ester hydrolysis on enzymic measurements of cholesterol.
Esterolytic activity of three enzymic cholesterol reagents was evaluated with use of human serum-based reference materials. Primary cholesterol standards were used to calibrate the enzymic methods, and incomplete cholesteryl ester hydrolysis was measured as the bias between the enzymic cholesterol values and corresponding reference values. The average biases observed with eight reference specim...

متن کاملCatalysis of phosphoryl transfer by prostatic acid phosphatase.
As part of a study on enzymic catalysis of group transfer, this laboratory has previously reported on the enzymic transfer of the glucuronyl radical from a variety of donor substrates to a number of acceptor alcohols (1). The phenomenon was studied in detail and conditions for efficient group transfer were investigated. The present paper reports the use of a similar approach in studying the aci...
متن کاملNMR analysis of covalent intermediates in thiamin diphosphate enzymes.
Enzymic catalysis proceeds via intermediates formed in the course of substrate conversion. Here, we directly detect key intermediates in thiamin diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent enzymes during catalysis using (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The quantitative analysis of the relative intermediate concentrations allows the determination of the microscopic rate constants of individual catalytic steps. As demons...
متن کاملProteases as catalysts for enzymic syntheses of opioid peptides.
Two alternative pathways leading to protease-mediated syntheses of Leu- and Met-enkephalin are described. Each peptide bond of the opiate peptides was formed by either papain, or alpha-chymotrypsin catalysis. N alpha-t-Butyloxycarbonyl amino acids and peptides or their esters served as carboxyl components, whereas amino acid and peptide phenylhydrazides were used as acceptor nucleophiles. After...
